3 Signs Your Furnace Might Need a Repair

November 7, 2019

As the weather starts to get a little chillier at night in Pineville, North Carolina, you might begin using your heating system to stay warm. Keep an eye out for any signs that your furnace isn’t working efficiently this fall so you can get any broken parts repaired or replaced before the colder weather arrives. Keep reading to learn some signs that your furnace might need a repair soon.

Age of Your Furnace

You can tell that your furnace may need a repair soon based on its age. A typical furnace will last around 15 to 20 years. In the last couple years of its life, yours will slowly become less efficient and need more repairs.

So if your furnace is around 20 years old and isn’t working very efficiently, you should look into getting a new one. It’s a good idea to replace an old, inefficient furnace before it completely breaks down. As a result, you won’t find yourself without a heating system in the dead of winter.

Higher Energy Bills

An inefficient system will use more energy to function. So if your energy bills are higher than usual, it could be a sign that your furnace may need a repair. The issue could stem from a buildup of dust and debris in your air ducts, thus reducing the airflow and causing your system to work harder. However, it could also be an issue directly in your furnace. You’ll need an inspection to determine the exact issue and appropriate repair.

Loud Noises

Another sign of a system in need of repair is the presence of loud noises while it’s running. Rattling, whistling, hums, groans, squeaks and other unusual noises may mean that something has come loose in your system. So if you hear any strange sounds this fall, get your system checked out as soon as possible to prevent other parts from becoming damaged too. As a result, you’ll reduce the risk of requiring a replacement.
