Strange Noises in Your Home

3 Causes of Strange Noises in Your Home

February 7, 2018

Houses are made of many different materials, and they often settle over time. An occasional creak in your Charlotte, North Carolina, home is nothing to worry about. But other noises could be a sign of a serious problem. Here are three common causes of strange noises in your home:

Rummaging Pests

If you hear scurrying or scratching sounds, you could have pests in your ductwork. Birds, mice, raccoons and other animals can crawl through gaps in your HVAC system’s ducts. They can block airflow by building nests in your ductwork, raising your utility bills.

Fur and particles from droppings can spread to every room in your home, causing bad smells, asthma and allergies. If you hear strange noises, have your ducts checked by a professional to prevent these problems. Call pest control, too.

A Dirty Air Filter

A dirty or clogged air filter often causes a whistling or screeching noises. That’s because, when air can’t pass through the filter, it has to go around the edges. You’ll also have to deal with low indoor air quality and higher energy bills, both of which are even more worrisome.

Change your air filter every 30 to 90 days. As a result, you’ll enjoy cleaner indoor air and limit the noises coming from your filter.

A Malfunctioning Furnace

A loud banging sound coming from your furnace could mean the burner isn’t lighting properly. Gas builds up in the ignition chamber, causing a small explosion when your heater finally lights. This can expose you and your family to carbon monoxide.

What’s more, it also increases your gas bills. Contact a service technician immediately to ensure your furnace isn’t endangering your family.
