How HVAC Maintenance Keeps Your Family Healthy

October 18, 2017

Regular HVAC maintenance can help keep your home in Charlotte, North Carolina, safe and comfortable. Taking care of your HVAC system also saves energy and prevents inconvenient breakdowns. Keep your family healthy by changing the air filter often, cleaning the outdoor unit and scheduling professional HVAC maintenance.

Change Your Air Filter Often

You should change your system’s air filter at least every three months. A dirty filter can’t catch dirt, dust, mold, pollen, pet dander and other pollutants. Instead, it’ll  spread contaminants through your ductwork and the rest of your home. These substances can cause health problems, including headaches, eye irritation, rashes, fatigue, and increased asthma or allergy symptoms. A clogged filter can also force your system to work harder, wasting energy and shortening its life.

Clean and Protect Your Outdoor Unit

You should check your HVAC system’s outdoor unit once per week for dirt, grass clippings, leaves, twigs and other items. Rinse anything you find with a garden hose to remove it from your unit. You should also trim trees near your unit. A falling branch can cause expensive damage.

Schedule HVAC Maintenance

You should schedule a visit from a service technician to check your HVAC system twice a year. That way, you can catch any problems before they become serious and expensive.

You can also keep your home’s indoor air quality high. Remember to inspect your ductwork along with your HVAC system. Dirty ductwork can waste energy by reducing your system’s airflow. It can also cause bad smells and health problems.
