Trust the Experts on Choosing the Correct Air Filter

March 11, 2017

The primary reason that air conditioners need repair is because of dirty air filters. Filters trap and keep airborne particulates from entering ducts and being circulated within the system. Changing or cleaning filters regularly is a task that can be done by a homeowner to help the system stay clean, protect equipment and prolong the life of the unit.

Types of HVAC Filters

Standard filters used in HVAC systems keep the heating and air conditioning system clean but do not significantly contribute to indoor air quality. Specialty filters help keep indoor air clean.

Different grades of filters capture specific sizes and kinds of particulates. Minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV) filters can be used in homes, offices, laboratories and hospitals depending on the type and size of particulate to be captured. High efficiency particulate arrestance (HEPA) filters remove particulates as small as .3 micron in size. An HVAC professional can recommend the type of filter that best suits your system and indoor air quality needs.

What Air Filters Do

Filters capture airborne particulates. Standard HVAC filters capture large particulates such as animal dander, dust, dust mites, insect parts and textile fibers. Better filters recommended for use in households capture particulates as small as 1 micron such as spores, some types of bacteria, hair spray and fine dust such as cooking flour. Filters used in laboratories and hospitals capture particulates down to .3 microns such as tobacco smoke and all types of bacteria.

When paired with other indoor air quality products such as ultraviolet lights, humidity control and ventilation equipment, indoor air quality can be improved.
