Your HVAC system plays an important role in creating and maintaining a comfortable environment in your Charlotte, North Carolina home. If it’s not working properly, you need to identify and fix the problem as soon as possible. An HVAC system may experience a wide range of issues throughout its lifetime, some of which are more common than others. Watch for these three common AC problems and how to prevent them:
Clogged Air Filter
A clogged air filter can restrict airflow from your HVAC system, causing it to work harder to cool your home. If left unattended, this problem can lead to higher energy bills and system malfunction.
Fortunately, you can easily fix it. All you need to do is check and clean your air filter regularly. If you’re using a disposable air filter, read the manufacturer’s instructions to find out how often you should replace it.
Low Refrigerant Level
If your HVAC unit is not cooling properly because of low refrigerant level, the problem is usually caused by undercharged or leaking refrigerant. If you’re dealing with a refrigerant leak, a professional should locate and repair it. Trying to perform this repair yourself can endanger your health and safety.
Frozen Coil
A frozen coil is usually the result of a problem with the airflow, which a dirty air filter or obstructed ductwork can cause. It can also be a sign of low refrigerant level.
If the coil in your HVAC unit is frozen, slowly pour warm water over it to remove the ice. To prevent the problem from occurring again, make sure the air filter and ducts are clean and the refrigerant level is adequate.
